Welcome! Wikis are websites that everyone can build together. It's easy!

March 2-8

The first week of class will be making sure you have the necessary software installed on your computer and that you have gained access to to course wiki so that you can add, change, and update information as needed. Also this week I would like to schedule a Skype call with each of you for a short chat, just so I understand more of what you are hoping to get out of this course. On the Skype page I have created a table with times that I am availible. Please sign up for a time that works well for you.

Things to accomplish this week:

1. Register for and gain access to the networkedclassrooms wiki (this site).
  • Create a page titled your name and introduce yourself to the rest of the class. (Example: Location, years teaching, reason for taking the course, hobbies, picture if you want, etc.)
  • You do this by clicking on Profile pages on the left and then clicking on "Add a new page" on the right. Add a picture if you would like, some information about you, and once you have set up your blog a link to your blog for this course. This is a great way to explore the wiki site and learn how to use it.
  • I have written a lot here and I'm sure there are plenty of spelling mistakes and grammar errors throughout. Please feel free to fix any you find by clicking on the easy edit button and editing the text.

2. Sign up for a Skype call with me by clicking on the Skype Sign up page and entering your name at one of the times available.

3. Create a Google Account if you do not already have one. It's free and simple to do.
  • Create a blog using blogger.com (If you already have a blog and you want to use it for this class that's great! No need to set up a new blog. If you don't have a blog, please set one up now.)
  • Post a link to your blog on your introduction page.

Software to download and install:

Skype
Audacity (PC users only)
Garage Band (Mac users: Should come pre-installed on all newer Macs. If note, please download from Apple's website)

Download and Purchase Text:

Download Knowing Knowledge by George Siemens (Free PDF)
Purchase B logs, Wikis, Podcasts, and Other Powerful Web Tools for Classrooms By Will Richardson (2006)

Hardware Needed:

You will need a microphone that plugs into your computer. Quality is up to you!

Set up your RSS Reader

  • Activity: Set up Google Reader (You should have already signed up for a Google Account) Watch the videos below to walk you through how to get started.

After you have set up your Google RSS Reader click on the export.opml file below. Download it to your computer and then follow these directions to import it into your Google Reader:

Once you have your OPML file, go back to Google Reader and click "settings" at the top right, then "import/export." Choose the location of your OPML file and click "import"; Google Reader will add all the subscriptions in the list to your account and start checking them for updates.

This is a list of blogs to get your started reading. This is just a beginner list. Feel free over the course of this class to delete those you do not find interesting and add those that you find "speak to you"
