Wikis in education
Will Richardson in Ch. 4 does a great job of giving an overview of what wikis are, how they can be and are used in education. They are a very powerful tool that, because of their collaborative nature, are creating some great connections between students all around the world.
Two of the top wiki projects that were done last year (06-07) were by Julie Lindsay and Vicki Davis. Julie is a technology teacher in Bangladesh and Vicki in Georgia. I encourage you to take a good half hour or so and look over the two amazing projects called The Flat Classroom Project and the Horizon Project.
Both of these projects used the wiki site wikispaces.com. A great free wiki site that is giving away 100,000 ad free wikis to educators.
A Google search for educational wiki projects will show you others as well.
Free wikis that you might want to check out.
wikispaces.com
pbwiki.com (blocked in China...for some unknown reason...just an FYI)
wetpaint.com (what we are using for this class)
There are other open sources wiki software as well that a district or teacher could install on their own system and use internally if they wanted to.
