Parent Permission FormThis is a featured page

January 13, 2009

Dear Parent,
Your son/daughter is currently enrolled at Daisy Bronson Middle School in the Winter Wellness Writing program. We are planning to begin our use of 21st Century Educational Technology tools in our classroom. Specifically, we’ll be looking at building community web blogs (often called “blogs”). We will use a wiki as the main technology tool for collaboration, communication, and developing the student’s literacy skills as independent writers – which is a key 21st Century Literacy skill. It is estimated that over 90% of teenagers use some type of social networking tool. As publishing personal information as well as photographs online is now extremely easy and instant for students, we want to ensure that they understand how to get the most from these opportunities in a safe and secure environment.

We know that it is important for students to learn about the benefits and dangers of being online, both at home and at school. Students will learn about internet safety, digital reputation (citizenship), what’s appropriate and what’s not for online communication, and cyber-bullying as part of their ongoing use of information technology. Because of the nature of this technology, your children's work, with your permission, will be available online and accessible via the Internet, though no personal information, images or outside access to any student details is available online. The website is only for our students and is monitored by both the staff and myself to ensure your son/daughter’s safety and privacy is protected. I hope that you, too, will monitor your child’s progress online. The web address for our wiki page is http://winterwellness.wetpaint.com . Since this is a closed, password- protected environment, I will need to invite you to join the wiki. If you are interested in joining, please email me at jcarbonneau@littletonschools.org. Then look in your inbox for an invitiation to join. I look forward to your participation and feedback.

Our goal is to enable students to use publishing tools, collaboration tools, and social networking tools effectively. I am interested in any feedback or suggestions that you have as we begin this work. Please give me a call at school if you would like more information. I can also be reached via e-mail at jcarbonneau@littletonschools.org.

I, having had to sign these since 1st grade for both my kids, whom, do not "get it" to begin with, think it's a breach of contract. But, that's me. I'd push it if it came to shove. Your idea is great Jen, but where is the understanding of the children, and worse yet, the parents, who really don't get it.??

I have listened to comments and enjoyed seeing the collaboration contributed to this form. Amazing how it works. I have changed the edits to black, and if there are further suggestions, please feel free to add your ideas in a new color. I have used this form already for my Winter Wellness group of ten students; however, I hope to start next year off with a parent orientation on the use of Web 2.0 tools and this form will be used again for all students in my English classes. And then will come the cross-school collaboration. Thank you all again.
Jen

Looks good Jen. I think most parents would not know what a wiki is. Maybe that would have to be explained?
Good job though.
